Born in 1858, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was known as a sportsman, hunter, and conservationist long before becoming president in 1901. He had seen firsthand the effects of things like overgrazing and pollution. At a time when most people still considered North America's natural resources inexhaustible, Roosevelt knew better.
After he became president, Roosevelt had the power to do something about his concerns for the environment. He wanted to ensure the sustainability of the country's resources and prevent the loss of animal species and their habitats. He wanted future generations of Americans to have the same natural resources and wildlife to enjoy. And, largely because of his actions, precious green space and national monuments are enjoyed by millions today. In order to conserve forests, Roosevelt created the United States Forest Service (USFS), an organization within the Department of Agriculture. Under his leadership, 150 national forests were established. He passed the National Monuments Act and declared eighteen sites as national monuments, including the Grand Canyon. His work didn't stop there. Roosevelt established five national parks, four national game preserves, and fifty-one federal bird reserves. All in all, Roosevelt protected 230 million acres (93 million ha) of public land during his presidency. His bird and national game preserves eventually became national wildlife refuges that are now managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Roosevelt was a conservationist ahead of his time. His legacy is seen in the beauty of natural resources throughout the United States, and his efforts have inspired scores of conservationists who follow in his footsteps, working to protect green spaces and wildlife for all to enjoy.
